The time is around 9:00pm and there’s a light breeze in
the air. The lights go dark as a silhouette walks from the left side
of the stage. Standing a few feet from this I start to smile. A sea
of people is shifting in all directions but the silhouette just
watches inquisitively. As flash bulbs burst away, the figure can be
seen smiling while it soaks up the energy. The stage lights up and
Björk greets the crowd in a beautiful dress with a hint of white
around her forehead. Unlike most of the crowd I was at ease in the
moment and forgot about the shifting mass of people. [All is full of
love] begins with the first lyrics sending the sea of people into
roaring applause. As the song continues, Björk paints a picture
across this desert valley canvas. Thanking us politely the sensual
intro of [Cocoon] begins. And who would have known that a song like
this would hypnotize the masses so gracefully.
The wind whips across the valley with Björk illuminated in white
light, and the string players beginning [Jóga]. With her solid voice
and a great ensemble backing her she belts out “State of emergency, is
where I want to be.” Slowly the crowd’s applause diminished and Zeena
Parkins worked her magic on [Generous Palmstroke]. Ever so focused
Björk sings, “I do confess, I feel you trickling” letting her left
hand do the motions. Wondering to myself if the night would continue
so gracefully Björk answers back with the electronic beats of
[Hunter]. Making her dance in place the strings add the icing to this
cake. Sensing Björk’s happiness the boys of Matmos draw out the
ending as she shakes her hands to the overlapping beats. Finished
with their masterpiece Björk and Matmos share some laughter and then
some thanks to the audience.
Continuing with the winds, Zeena Parkins begins [Pagan Poetry]. Björk
stomped her little feet and started a new verse only to stop. While
ending with the extra lyrics, “But he makes me want to hand myself
over to him.” After I helped a few people over the center barricades
[5 years] starts. I look up to see Björk marching in place and
looking extremely happy. This was a major highlight of the concert.
With Zeena, Matmos and the strings supporting her, Björk sings, “You
can't handle, you can't handle love” in a child like voice. I was
blown away.
After more thanks and more wind [Isobel] begins. The lighting and
atmosphere was so euphoric. Björk enjoying herself yet again, slowly
motions her arms from one side to the other in time with the song’s
ending. Cheers and screams of I love you were the reward from the
crowd. But that didn’t seem to help the poor computers because a man
walks up to Björk and whispers something into her ear. She then says,
“I think our computers are ill.” Björk the true performer walks to
Zeena Parkins and they talk some then do an impromptu version of
[Gotham Lullaby], yet another highlight of the night. Björk’s voice
was enormous. Matmos decided to let us all know the computers were
back up by mixing in some electronic delights for us near the end of
the song. Of course that got a wonderful reaction from the crowd.
Even Björk had to note after the song ended, “I think our computers
are cured.” [Heirloom], another highlight, was very full sounding and
mixed up as a more beat focused song. Definitely feeling ecstatic,
Björk was caught off guard while dancing and backed up into a string
player. The crowd made some small laugher, but Matmos were in control
and added more layers of electronic delights during the ending. Björk
gave us a thank you, thank you, thank you, and then performed a
tremendous version of [Bachelorette]. Leaving the crowd to ponder if
we were the killer whales trapped in her bay.
The stage lights turn red as [Army of Me] begins. Always the crowd
pleaser, this version rocked the house and Björk was doing her classic
pose to the beat. With a smile plastered to my face [Human Behavior]
plays out while everyone dances in place. The audience seemed to love
this and was getting livelier in return. Walking to the left, for
second she walks back to center stage and [Our Hands] kicks in.
Thinking to myself this was the last song and very pleased with the
show, Björk walks to the left side of the stage one last time. But as
I watch her it seems she’s putting some kind of harness on. With the
crowd yelling Björk she runs out with a shiny green entity caressing
her body. Boom, boom, boom the thumping base of [Pluto] starts to
shake the earth. Thousands of people are jumping up and down as
strobe lights flicker. Magically the winds picks up and Björk dances
like a person who just won the lottery. “Excuse me, but I have to
explode, explode this body off me.” I would have never imagined she
would close the show with my favorite song. Awesome! So while the
extended mix of this version draws to an end Björk scurries of stage
and my Coachella journey is complete. I would like to thank you Miss
Björk Guðmundsdóttir for making my solo trip to Coachella something I
will never forget.

Bjork,
Your artistry is inspiring. Saturday night at the
Caochella festival will live in the hearts of your fans forever.
Your presence was sublime. With the collaboration of your
sensuously breathy voice, Matmos, Zeena and the strings, our hearts
were engulfed with warmth and our souls were lifted to Pluto! There
will never be another like you. Thank you for sharing your inner
light with us. It gives so many the strength and courage to simply love.

i was fortunate enough to be front row at the ROH
concert in december. it was the best night of my life, however i
cannot say the same about coachella. i was about four people from
bjork. when she came on i seriously thought i was going to suffocate
and die right there, which would be just a bit too romantic a way to
go for me. it was mayhem and hell being in that audience with people
around me shouting "stop fucking pushing you fucking asshole" and
practically getting into physical fights meanwhile bjork is chanting
"all is full of love" above us like a beautiful angel. i tried to
leave my pain filled body (someone had punched me on my lower spine)
and float above the mean people around me with the music. it worked
for awhile until a crowd surfer landed on the back of my head and i
almost lost consciousness. was the intense pain worth it
all?........uh, it's bjork live! you make me happy even in hell
bjork.

p.s. congratulations on the new baby!

I'd like to add my view to the Coachella Story... I got
there kind of late (in time for Siouxie and I didn't know that the
Lotus One was playing next...) so I was right where i had to stand on
tippy toes the whole time. However, i was completely blown away with
amazement. Her voice really is every bit as beautiful live as on the
records if not more so. As is she. Plus, I was not expecting Zeena,
strings or Matmos to necessarily be there, and the sounds were
incredible. It may have been loud, but unlike most of the music i
heard at Coachella, the earplugs came out and even the loudest sounds
seemed to carress my body rather than jarring it. This is musical
evolution. At one point, Matmos were creating these really low
frequencies which i could feel resonating in my legs. Even though the
crowd was pushing between songs, during the songs it felt like this
incredible calm would descend. It really gives me a sense of hope,
that the c! ollective tastes seem to be running in such a positive
direction. For someone like Bjork to be so popular, although sad in
terms of not being able to see her at small intimate concerts, does
mean that quite a few people are receptive to great art and
sensitivity, and that technology is being used in such a positive,
shamanistic way... pretty cool. |
bjork,
seeing you that night was so very incredible. i dont want to sound
redundant but, you were great!!!! youre performance was so inspiring,
for me to see you again........hopefully you come back here to
southern california!!!!!........i was so close to you...i SAW YOU
BLINK!!! and i said "I LOVE YOU!" so many times my throat was hurting
at the end of the night. ALL MY BRUISES FROM THE SIOUSIE SIOUX show
was sooo definitely worth-it...(being pushed onto those dividers in
the middle)..... I LOVE YOU(again)......and hopefully i get to see you
again..

Dear bjork,
I am amazed with your performance at the Coachella Music and Arts
Festival. I traveled all the way from Arizona to see you. When I got
to the stage everyone had the same goal in mind: who could get the
closest and who was the biggest Bjork fan. I argued till I was blue
in the face until I met this 6 foot 3 about 250 pounds that said I am
the biggest Bjork fan, I don't think anyone wanted to argue with that.
He was right he was the biggest, I am not so sure about the fan
part.It was awesome everyone was Entranced with the beauty of her
voice.
Thank you for an awesome performance!!!

My Sweet Little Cabbage--
Since I first saw you on television dancing atop a cargo truck, I have
wanted to be near you. Last Saturday evening, my dreams seemed to be
coming true as you were there about 20 feet in front of me.
Your performance was amazing. The affirmation of your beauty,
mystique, and grace took hold of me and now I only dream of when I can
watch you do your magic onstage again.
Thank you.

Bjork ended the first night with an entrancing and nearly perfect
show, prancing between soft orchestration, thudding drum-and-bass and
outfits that perfectly matched her moves and personality. For the
encore she donned a giant green set of wings, which blew over her as
she performed, making it appear as if she were in the center of a
leafy cabbage. |

Though
Bjork's Saturday (April 27) headlining set seemed a bit like
spectacle over substance (just as many people were wondering what
she'd wear as what she'd play), Iceland's weirdest export delivered
some solid music regardless. Bedecked in a flowing, shoulder enhancing
white dress (accentuated, at the end of the evening, by an enormous
leaf) and backed by a string section, harpist, and Matmos,
Bjork's intensity convinced those in doubt that her top-of-the-lineup
status was justified. Songs like "All Is Full of Love" were sometimes
arrhythmic and often bizarre, but she delivered them with immediacy,
shimmying under just-for-her fluorescent lights and sweetly saying "sank
you!" throughout the set. (Jeff Miller) |
http://www.mtv.com/
Headliners Björk and the Chemical Brothers on Saturday and the Prodigy
and Oasis on Sunday lived up to their top billing by stocking their
sets with hits but did little to differentiate their shows from any
other night on a stage.
Björk, beautiful in a white satin dress and olive green belt, and
polite in her execution during and in between songs, seemed to the be
the festival highlight, judging by the size and energy (mosh pits?!)
of the audience during her show, which drew heavily from last year's
sonically adventurous Vespertine. |
|
I was in complete shock at the magnitude of Bjork's
charms captivating the throng of open mouthed babes
waiting for their suckle from the liquid music that
poured
forth from her set. The beauty of natural desert and
the flow
of the wind carrying the frequencies of her voice and
beats
led me to believe the total caress that is Bjork in
her essence of comfort. As you can see I greatly enjoyed it.
Thank you for your inspiration.

im sure all this crap has been said allready, and you
expect such wonderfull praise, but i really enjoyed your performance
on Saturday night at the Coachella Festival. seeing that i own and
have watched many tapes of your shows, i had decently high
expectations. however, you definetly lived up to them, and when you
played Bacelorette, you made my night. all of the other DJ's at the
show were incredible, however, the beats seemed to become ever so
repeatitious and mundane. your music is in a class of its own, and
it shown beautifully Saturday night. i personally thank you for
giving me a reason to fly from Dallas, Tx to Palm Springs, Ca. it
was defintely worth it. take it easy lady. later.

Dear Bjork,
About 6 weeks ago I received a mind-blowing birthday
present--a ticket to Coachella for the soul purpose of experiencing
your music in real time. We flew down from Seattle to L.A. on Friday
and drove to Indio, then it was up at 6am on Sunday and back to
Seattle. Was the magic worth the effort? Absolutely. The beauty of
the music was literally stunning and far surpassed the expectations
that I had already told myself were impossibly high. I would--and
will--fly to the other side of the planet for the pleasure of
another performance. Thank you for sharing your genius with me and
the rest of the world.

Seeing Bjork live was simply unforgettable, I was so
blown away by her presence on stage and her ethereal voice. Hearing
her sing gave me the shivers. I was up front for the entire day just
so I could be as close as possible when she came on and she certainly
did not disappoint. Even though people were shoving and pushing their
way up like mad crazy, there was still this sense of tranquility just
listening to her. Although there were a lot of great performances
throughout the day, Bjork was far and away the best act of the day and
most likely the entire weekend. Everyone should try to see her live,
it just takes it to a whole other level. Zeena and the rest of the
orchestra just made her sound so luscious and yummy delicious. She is
so unbelievably cute with her moves and her accent, that night will be
something I'll never forget.

Gorgeousness!!! Bjork comes out in a
white frilly thing with a green sash and matching green eye
make-up. Her hair is down, but I can't tell if she's cut it or
anything… god she looks like an angel. There is a 7-piece
string orchestra (cellos, violins, and bass), plus Zeena
Parkins and her harp, and
an engineer at the computer. Curiously, the set list is
completely dominated by Homogenic tracks. She is never one for
stage banter, but always very gracious onstage. She goes
through many variations of "Thank you" during the night.
So cute! Here is the detailed set list:
BJORK
1. "All is Full of Love" - She played the same version at
Dorothy Chandler. It's the remix video version. With one line
"You be given love…" she possesses the crowd. (Homogenic)
2. "Cocoon" (Vespertine)
3. "Joga" (Homogenic)
4. "Pagan Poetry" I was a little disappointed that she didn't
hit the high note with "He makes me want to hand myself over."
She never does live for some reason. (Vespertine)
5. "Hunter" (Homogenic)
6. "Generous Palmstroke" - Most people haven't heard this
folky track with the wondrous spinning harp. (B-side circa
Vespertine)
7. "Isobel" (Post)
8. "Five Years" (Homogenic)
There is a funny moment here where she slowly tells the
audience that "The computer is a bit ill, so we're going to
play some more ballads."
9. "????" - It takes a lot to stump me, but she sang a song
entirely in Bjork gibberish accompanied by the harp. My guess
is it must be her "we're fixing the computer so I'll stall the
moment with a little gibberish song" number.
She announces that "The computer is cured." I love how she
rolls her Rs!
10. "Bachelorette" (Homogenic)
11. "Heirloom" - She didn't perform this track on
her last concert, so the warm glowing lights were a fun
surprise. (Vespertine)
12. "Army of Me" - A new version… I've never heard
it done quite this way.
(Post)
13. "Our Hands" - Like "Generous Palmstroke," this
was probably the first time that anyone had heard this song,
unless of course they were as geeky as me downloading it.
(B-side circa Vespertine)
-ENCORE-
14. "Human Behavior" - She didn't get as crazy a
she did performing this last time, but she made everyone's
night with the sole track from Debut. (Debut)
-ENCORE-
15. "Pluto" - She came out wearing this outrageous
large green shell thing on her back that nearly covered her in
the front. She went berserk running around the stage playing
with her prop/costume. If you're familiar with the song,
you'll know that it has only one line of lyrics and the rest
is her moaning to almost volcanic techno. "Excuse me, but I
just have to explode this body off of me." (Homogenic) |

Hotly tipped Aussie act The Vines, performing in the Mojave tent were

Bjork proved once again why
she is the Queen of electronica! Even with the computers "catching a
little bit of cold" as she so graciously put it.....she put on a show many
will remember for years to come. I was one of the many photographers
up front and must admit I was honored to be a part of the whole experience.
Had to check myself a few times because I couldn't believe she was up there
doing her thing! She was glowing and having a good time. I also
notice a cute little tummy protruding from her dress? Possiably Maybe? If so
congradulations! Maybe its a little girl...? Bjork your a class act and
everyone at Coachella went home happy. I know this for sure....During
the last three songs I was taking pictures from inside the sea of fans
watching and I have never in my life seen so many people so full of
happiness and joy. Your music is magical and there will never be an other
performer like you!

I couldn't physically see
much of bjork last night since it was hard to keep on tiptoes to see above
the crowd, but the music was ethereal. it was hard to carry off such an
intimate performance like that, but she definitely pulled it off even in
that kind of a venue. it was particularly touching when she sang, "our
hands"...what an inspiration. and she was adorable, especially when she
said, "i think our computers might be ill" and then with her little voice,
"i think our computers might be cured"...bjork under the stars, outdoor,
...almost like aurora!

"Björk’s appearance on the Coachella stage was as much of a highlight as her
music. The Icelandic queen came on stage dressed in what looked like a white
wedding dress, although one couldn’t be sure without the traditional
large-screen video images that accompany most big concerts. Her performance
with a string section grew in intensity as the evening wore on." |

Bjork,
If you do read this i have to say that you
are one of the most beautiful and talented human beings ive ever know
of. Ive never felt so much feeling and emotion listening to any other
music then yours, i wish the best for you and your family and all that
you love.I know in an interview you said that you dont like it when
your fans say "i love u" cause they dont personally know you, but i do
know your music and i love your music and admire you so much. Your
performance at Coachella was so powerful i started crying like a
little baby by the time i heard (Joga) and periodically through out
your performance. I hope one day i can see you perform again. Take
care ^_^
Sincerely,
Dallas p.s. Thank you for such
a good time. |

I absolutely must add my two cents about Bjork at
Coachella. First of all, she was breathtaking and the music was
phenomenal. There cannot be any dispute about that. However, SOME
PEOPLE ARE SO RUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My boyfriend and I drove 2
1/2 hours to see her. We got there before Siousie (also amazing) to
be sure that we were able to see her. Well, that just did
absolutely no good whatsoever. We may as well have stayed out of the
crowd completely because I simply could not see her. Also there were
so many people just behaving ridiculously. I got kicked by two
different crowd surfers. Once in the head, another in the neck. Not
to mention the chick who decided to sit on her friend's shoulders.
C'mon, lets not aggravate the problem. Oh and of course, being
short, I got stuck behind the tallest person at the concert. The one
thing that really made me mad though is the fact that everyone was
talking. It was so rude and disrespectful to everyone else who was
silenced in amazement. I know everyone was super excited to see her.
Who wouldn't be? Still, all the talking just wasn't necessary. Oh
well, one must be optimistic, the evening was beautiful, the weather
was amazing, Bjork looked gorgeous, my boyfriend said Bjork kills
Radiohead (he had never really heard her before), and the music was
inspiring. Ahhhhh... once again, all is right with the world.
|
bjork was absolutely amazing at coachella, i wouldn't
expect any less. bjork, you give me reason to live. thank you.
katherine
p.s. txjaxx-matmos isn't so much cute as, well, i think he was rubbing
the other guy's back with a microphone as part of the song. listen
closely. |
For the whole Coachella event the crowd was amazingly
nice. There were a few assholes that insisted on shoving their way
around and frankly didn't give a shit about anyone else, but those
were also incredibly few in number. There was not even a lot moshing
or crowd surfing. (I see one review stating there was moshing at her
show, but at least in front I think it was more people jumping up and
down. there was no room to really mosh. It was packed and ppl were
shoving)
For those that were not there THE WHOLE CROWD would just surge forward
towards the front of the stage ALL AT ONCE. The people at the front
were trapped against each other and a metal fence. If you tried to
push back, it HURT. There was no way to stop the people from crushing
you. I was scared there a couple of times too as I tried resisting and
was met with the crowd's weight. I thought I was going to rupture a
muscle or something, or get crushed against the fence I was standing
beside. Security would alternatively give a shit and help some out of
the crowd, and not give a shit.... they'd look, hear pleas, and walk
right past. Some begged for them to make an announcement to quit
shoving, but they were refused.
It was amazing that once she started singing, the crowd did grow much
much much more calm, with only a couple of instances of crowd surges
throughout the performance.
I think she was quite taken by the crowd's reaction to her. She was
happy. Incredibly happy. There were some people shoving to get to the
front of Siouxsie and the Banshees gig just before her's. But the real
shoving started before Björk's gig (and Chem Bro). When she came out
everyone erupted in cheers and applause and everything. It was clear
that huge crowd was there to see _HER_. She picked up on that
immediately and got this kind of
semi-disbelief-yet-semi-realization-plus-happy look on her face that
"wow THAT is for ME... they're going apeshit for ME."
Those that used to watch the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson will
hopefully know what I am talking about. The really big stars that came
on would sometimes get asked the question: "How did you know when you
made it, when you arrived?"
One comedian, can't remember who right now, said, "When I just did
something, it was nothing, and I wasn't even trying to be funny and
they laughed."
If she has never felt like she has "made it," she should now. Anything
"extra" she threw into the performance, ppl ate it up and went nuts
over. Just a little extra gesture would generate cheers and hollers
from the crowd. And on top of that was the turn out. She's played
stadiums before I think, wembley or something, so I don't know if this
was her largest crowd ever. It was a huge crowd tho. And, unlike the
other concerts I attended, it seemed a HUGE number of people in the
crowd was singing along. I was really surprised. You could hear the
crowd singing quite loudly for many of the songs (unlike the 4 other
concerts I've been to) It was definitely not just a few people
standing around me that I was listening to. It was -the crowd-.
She expressed her happiness too. She would say "thank you thank you
thank you thank you" several times over after songs in a really perky
voice. Plus, it felt like she really was pleased, too. She also was
more lively in her dancing too. The dancing did seem a bit restricted
by the pregnancy tho. It did not matter. Her happiness shone through .
It was almost like the feeling I get watching her perform on Vessel.

I'm getting chills
as I scroll through this massive list of reviews for Bjork's lovely
set at Coachella on Saturday. The only thing that could have made
it better for me would be if I had been 2 feet taller, 75 feet
closer to the stage (with a REAL non-disposable camera), and not
torn away from my lovely front row center spot at Beta Band's set in
order to see her. I loved every minute of her set, and when Pluto
came on, I couldn't keep still. Obviously I don't have anything new
to offer, but I have to thank our lovely Icelandic fairy for yet
another wonderful and imaginative set. I wish I could live that day
over and over again...

I must say, as a person that has been to all three
Coachella
shows-this was thee standout performance. My partner and I flew down
to Palm Springs from Seattle for a show that we will never forget.
My partner is not a Bjork fan,but was simply blown away. Even some of
my indie rocker pals from LA where in awe of the performance. I
personally do not think that I have EVER IN MY LIFE heard sound from
an outdoor venue so crisp and clear. The sound engineers were
brilliant.
It was quite clear from the beginning that the crowd was going to take
a musical journey to the land of Bjork. The roar from the crowd when
she walked out was insane. "All of is full of Love" was immaculate,
as was "Army of Me."
She was beyond kind and gracious. The energy flowing from her
was immense. Flinging her hands above her head dancing was a personal
highlight to me. The lighting design was very clean and simple-yet so
effective I could hardly believe it. Very lush colours of purple, blue
and yellow. The hanging vertical lights alternating during "Army of
me" blew me away! Personal faves of the night were "Joga,""Pagan
Poetry,"and "Pluto." Her little sash converting into a green leaf was
such a treat.
Someones comment about Bjork billing as a headliner is somewhat true.
She was the headliner but it was decided long ago that Chemical
Brothers would close the show. The schedule that was emailed to me
from goldenvoice reps even the day before the show stated that
Chemical Brothers were to be last (although it was stated that it
could change).
Great show! Breathtaking beyond words.

oh my! what a grand nite.
and my favorite comment of the day was from Jack Johnson, who
performed a few hours before bjork. Jack mentioned that he was honored
to be at Coachella and to share the same stage as bjork, as he is a
"big fan" of her. That comment made me like Jack even more! bjork was
magnificent!!!
and what a magical setting in the desert.

Let me just say first, thank God for the good weather
we had Saturday at Coachella. I was there for last years show as
well, and the heat was really almost unbearable...but this year was
just gorgeous perfect! Now, I thought that Siousie Sioux was going to
be hard to follow because I have to admit they went out there and just
killed it! They blew the crowd away, but as soon as they were off the
stage it was like a warzone in the crowd!!!!
My husband and I were towards the front left side of the stage and
there were people practically maiming each other to get up
front....Bjork, if you read this, lemme just tell you that you have a
following like no other celebrity,....there are some mega crazy,
insane die-hard Bjork fans out there...I thought I was one of them,
but I was proved wrong...There was a girl who was in front of me, she
got up on her boyfriends shoulders when Bjork came out to see her
better...o! h man, she almost got her @$$ beat down by a pack of girls
who were loosing it behind us!!! They were yelling and screaming
things to this girl to get down like, threats and stuff !!!! It was
crazy!!!
Bjorks' entrance was just breathtaking. You wouldn't believe the
flashes from all the cameras when she walked out on stage...and she
didn't say one word for the longest time,.,,,,she just stood there
with the biggest smile on her face, which looked sooo genuine....I
think she was truly happy to be there with all of us....she let
everyone get a good look at that beautiful dress she was wearing and
they all took buttloads of pictures.............and then came the
base.........Booooomm!!! It was so loud man the base just dropped the
floor out from under us, the whole valley shook. It was the beginning
to All is full of love!
Holy crap! A sea of thousands transfixed to the incredible sounds
coming from that tiny body and her wonderful musicians!!!! Now, I
couldn't help but notice while I was watching, that little belly? Ok,
well, I just won't go there!!!! hehehe LOL!!!
Bjork seemed to mellow the crowd out through her set, she was feeding
off the energy the crowd was giving her and they were feeding from her
too, it was lovely...I was also at the Dorothy Chandler concert and I
have to say these two shows were two very different but awesome
experiences.....Indio is surrounded by beautiful , majestic
mountains,,, walls of palm trees, vast expanses of grass and art, warm
breezes and there was a full moon that night to top it off! I saw
Kelly Osbourne standing off to the left side of the stage below me
watching Bjork as well! It was a great night and Bjork was the
highlight!!! I will send with this story my pictures as well! Thanks
to you Bjork for the beats and the rhythms and the voice that gives me
goosebumps every time I hear it!
Love,

Dear Bjork,
i traveled from mexico city just to see you in coachella. definitevly
it was worth it. i remember you saying thank for tonight, well let me
thank you for that unique paled moon night. g. from mexico. |
Well, the performance was amazing. I was very
surprised to see strings on the stage, but it turned out great. The
set began pretty quietly, and I feared my prediction about a harder
set was not going to come true. But then, HUNTER! I loved it. Matt
and Drew really tweaked out the ending, and kept Bjork dancing. She
kept looking over, like "When are you guys gonna stop?" When they did
she was smiling and ran over to them laughing. That was the thing that
stood out the best during the whole performance: her good mood was
very apparent. She not only did her usual "thank you", but once did a
very long "thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou" and even
let out some animal noise in lieu of a thank you after one song. She
did the "car-screeching" noise during Gotham Lullaby, which I had only
heard her do singing It's Oh So Quiet on Jay Leno a long time ago.
She was all smiles the whole time and just seemed to be really
enjoying herself.
I was fairly close, but the crowd was packed so tightly, it was
crazy. I have no idea how big the crowd stretched for, but I'm sure
it was big.It was pretty windy during the set, but it gave the show
more atmosphere. She had a spotlight on her the whole time, which
highlighted the smoke in the air (from a smoke machine I guess).
Because of the wind, it blew through pretty fast, making the spotlight
look more like a swirling funnel of soft white light that surrounded
her. Very cool (but probably completely unintentional). 6 songs off
of Homogenic! Very nice, since I missed that tour. Heirloom had a
new intro, and it sounded great. This was the best Army of Me I have
ever heard her do live. I think it was because the beats were coming
from Matmos, instead of being recreated by a live drummer. And the
ending could not have been better: Pluto. Wow! I had only dreamed
that she would play that, and she did! She came out in her amazing
transformer dress and blasted us with it.
Bjork would have won the "cutest peformer of the Coachella" award, but
Matmos snagged it. One of them (sorry, don't know which one is which)
massaged the other's back during Cocoon, and played with his hair a
little. Kind of an "awww, they're in love" moment.
Oh, and one more thing. Although she was billed as the headliner, she
was not. Chemical Brothers actually closed out the day. I'm not sure
why the last-minute switch, but it turned out OK.

Bjork,
My friend and I went to see you at Coachella on Saturday. All is Full
of Love was beautiful. At the begining on the second song this guy
kicked my friend in the face causing a major bloody nose and a
migrain. We spent the rest of your set in the medical tent watching
lots of people who couldn't handle their drug intake. I was super
bummed. I just wanted to let you know that from what I could hear
muffled through the medical tent was awesome. Where could I get a
bootleg?
Peace,

BEAUTIFULLY GORGEOUS!!!!
I was very fortunate to be able to be one of the lucky few who saw
Bjork's beautiful performance up close. I waited for four hours just
to see her and it was all worth it. As she drew on stage she stood
there and just smiled beautifully in a gorgeous white dress and green
sash. I must also mention her tiny little pop belly, it was so cute
:). She couldn't have done a better performance. Even with the
tremendous crowd nothing could have stopped anyone from having a
wonderful time!!! The minor difficulties with the computer made it
even better because she gave her little rendition on how the computers
were ill! But all is full of love and it was pulled off beautifully
Thank you Bjork for the opportunity to see you. It will always be
remembered.

Bjork was beautiful. Inbetween some of her songs,
however, the heavy hiphop beats and voices of Jurassic 5 (which I
really didn't mind) came blasting from "The Outdoor Stage" nearby.
As if in response to that, Bjork (on "The Coachella Stage")
saturated the polo field with a super heavy sonic bumping quaking
rendition of "Pluto" which electrified the ground into our limbic
systems. Awesome end to an awesome stage show.

Bjork was truly the highlight of the festival: What an
amazing
preformance she has shared with all who attended. I will never ever
forget the song "Generous Palmstroke" she preformed that night, for as
long as I live. I still have tears in my eyes
thinking about it. Bjork, you are a true source of inspiration!
Thank you for being you. Thank you for sharing your heart with us all.

I flew from houston to indio, ca to see bjork. the rest of the line-up
didn't interest me. i tried to get near the front, but that proved to be
impossible. the crowd was large and went on as far as my eyes could see. it
was packed tight like a can of sardines. and through the first song (all is
full of love..) people were pushing, shoving, and occasionally screaming as
the sea of people sloshed around. bjork calmed everyone down luckily. a
group of five or six string players, zeena parkins, and
matmos accompanied the icelandic princess.
the setlist included (i'm probably forgetting some..): all is full of love,
joga, hunter, heirloom, pagan poetry, generous palmstroke, human behavior,
army of me (different beat than the album.. trip hoppy?), isobel (the beat
went on longer than normal), pluto.. a new song that involved everyone on
stage clapping their hands to the same beat. one of the highlights for me
(drew of matmos was getting down on his alesis air fx).. if this is a taste
of things to come.. i'm ready. drew's computer crashed at one point (it was
ill..) and bjork and the harpist did a quick rendition of something, but
then as bjork put it.. "it was currrrred."
bjork wore a long white dress and what at first looked like a green ribbon
type thing, but the last song (pluto) she unfolded it and made them into
wings and started dancing around and flapping them and then brought them
over her head so she was inside this leaf looking thing.. like the flower of
a huge plant and the cold wind was blowing and it was great. the strobe
lights were going off and pluto's beat was so intense. people were jumping
around.. though not as many as i wanted. i sure was. all in all it was one
of the best concerts i've been to. if you've seen bjork, how lucky.. if
not.. make an effort.
i didn't take any pictures, but coachella did give out video cameras to
people to make this coachella video thing. one of those people was near me
in the crowd. there were also a few professional video men around the stage
and in the pit. so maybe a dvd could be possible..
i love bjork! =)
tyler. wishing he could hide there too.. |
Her performance at Coachella was grand and majestic to say the
least. The entire crowd was treated with special songs that haven't been
performed in a great while (i.e. 5 years, Gotham Lullaby). Eventhough the
computer they where using on stage broke down a couple of times, the audience
didn't care and appreciated her apologies and the many Thank You's she said
through her performance, she even said "Gracias!" once, Que buena Onda! (Cool).
The best part came at the end when she unfurled what seemed to be Green
leafs/wings and performed an intense version of "Pluto" which really got the
crowd moving. April 27, 2002 at Coachella will be an evening that I and my
fellow Björk fans will never forget. One interesting tid bit that many of us in
the crowd noticed and wish to know the truth, has Björk gained a little bit of
weight or is she expecting?

All Is Full Of Love,
Cocoon,
Pagan Poetry,
Our Hands,
Hunter,
Bachelorette,
Gotham Lullaby,
Joga,
Pluto,
5 Years,
Heirloom,
Human Behavior,

Musical Accompaniment:
Matmos on beats and synths
Zeena on harp (electro/acoustic), accordian, and celeste
Six piece string section (two cellos and 4 violins)
Show and Bjork we're short but sweet.
Interesting things to note, Pluto was very tremendous
Heirloom was performed first time publically. It was a much lusher version
than the Vespertine one with lots of harp and synth accents to make it
softer and gentler.
The computers crashed a couple of times leading to Bjork doing a few more
ballads (i.e. GL)
For Pluto, she unwound the green portion of her gown, nice as usual, and it
became this shimmering green leaf as she moved around the stage.
First time 5 years was performed in a long time!
