| Gee, after thirteen or so years of being a devoted Björk/'cubes fan, I've never heard her speak for extended periods. Something new indeed! A long video montage of Björkish achievements followed by Charlie Rose reading a series of positive quotes from critics made him seem a bit of a brown-nose. He talked too much for my taste, finishing Björk's thoughts for her, and interrupting her in mid-sentence. But some information was bound to be gleaned in an hour's worth of conversation. I found out how often she goes to Iceland, something I've wondered about. For those who didn't see it, she says it depends on her level of activity how often she goes back, but has the luxury to go anytime she wants. And she can just go and pitch a tent and sing to the top of her lungs and after two days leave and that's enough. Her music is a balance of "anal" and wild. She meticulously constructs her song, then in generally one take she'll record her vocal track. Aside from collaborators, she has no musical influences because she came from a time when she and her Icelandic contemporaries rejected foreigners' music and attempted to construct music that would be considered purely Icelandic. One of the good sides to her fame is her ability to contact and secure potential collaborators and get things done as soon as possible. As to her experience on Dancer in the Dark, she said she really enjoyed making the music. Rose asked her a trick question, but I'm not sure if he knew that. He asked what the music in her mind sounded like. Of course she didn't have a detailed response, because if she did we'd be hearing it already. She hopes she has fifty years left for her quest to recreate the music in her head. That's why she won't be doing any acting from now on. And she's happy that she hasn't compromised herself one bit. See, I did get to hear what she has to say. But all respects to Charlie Rose because I don't know any interviewer in the States who would devote so much time to Björk. The show ended with a lengthy bit of "Hidden Place" vid—starting from when the female reproductive organs fly out of her mouth to the end. /Jericho Saria, Stockton CA - 3159 |
