| Björk performs Cocoon Jay: Very nice! Good to see you, have a seat. That was terrific (gives microphone to Björk). That was great, how are you? (she puts microphone on) There you go .. want a tissue? Björk: No, I'm OK. Jay: Ah, OK. Thanks for coming back! Now this uh (gets flustered) -- this, actually this looks like your dress (looks down at the Vespertine CD in his hands) ..the swan uhh.. now see, I liked ..did you.. people got so excited. I thought it was fun, I thought it was cute. Were you surprised by all the commotion that -- that the dress caused at the Oscars last year? Björk: A little bit. Jay: (laughs) (audience laughs) Björk: These are the people that did the Bubsy Berkeley movies, right? Jay: right, right .. yea, yea Björk: They're not exactly subtle, are they? Jay: no, no .. not at all, not at all (laughter from the audience). Well I thought you did a good job (screams and applause begin to erupt from the audience -- "we love you!" "you're beautiful!!!") will you sign our bike? Björk: (over the applause) eh? Jay: Will you sign the bike for us? Björk: sure... (gets up to sign the motorcycle) Jay: I want to thank our guests, I want to thank Björk... While I missed the live performance on the Tonight Show, I am happy that the clip from Bjork's interpretation of Cocoon is sirculating on the internet. I am delighted to see her appear on television, and to present performances that are not only equal to what we expect from the CD, but also creative, and challenging. Bjork's work and style is clearly not one that is standard in American television variety shows. I was particularly thrilled by her two male engineer/accompanists who created the crackling noise using a lavalier microphone that one rubbed rather sensuously on th other man's hair and back. At first, if you don't spot the microphone, it looked like some unexpected display of homoeroticism, until you realize how that plays into the song. Brilliant! The performance of Pagan Poetry on the David Letterman sow was also remarkable. i hope to see more of Bjork on American TV.. And speaking of TV, i'd like to comment on the beauty and pure genius behind the PAGAN POETRY video. it's played in a local movie theatre and I was blown away. Cheers from Seattle! Javier, SPIRALMAN It was such a great experience to see Bjork on the Jay Leno Show. After seeing her at the Civic Opera House here in Chicago, I've been COMPLETELY into Bjork, in every way and form. I watched the show from the very beginning and it was simply wonderful to hear Bjork's name and the crowd's response. Finally, she came out and sang a beautiful rendition of "Cocoon." While it was very similar to that at the Civic, I was dumbfounded. This was perhaps Bjork's voice at the purest form- a simply fabulous intimate tone that just made me smile. Her hair was so beautiful and she looked so pretty. Zeena Parkins also had this great smile on her face that was so nice to see. I'm so glad I had one last chance to see Bjork before I have to wait another year or so for her to come back here. Thanks so much Bjork! ~Chris After suffering that small-minded O'Reilly, it was with a dramatic sense of relief that my girlfriend and I enjoyed Bjork's performance of the beautiful song "Cocoon." It's kind of weird to see someone so unconventional appearing in such a conventional setting. And we were amused by the awkward interaction between our Icelandic heroine and her Hollywood host (cheers to the Tonight Show booker ... isn't this her second appearance?). The best part was listening to the fans in the audience wildly cheer her on, then go dead-silent for the song, only to erupt again even more enthusiastically when she finished. I wish she appeared on our TV more often. ~ David It was fun to see bjork sing at the Jay Leno show! I'm afraid that the crowd really frightened her or something, because she tried to run off stage as soon as she was done signing the bike. She had to be told by the show's producers to go back on stage and take some pictures w/ Leno. The Greenland choir sat in the audience and showed extreme friendliness waving to bjork's fans. Bjork's voice was so strong! Just lovely~ ahh.... Well, I just want to say hello to the people I met while waiting in line, so..."hi ya'all!" thank you for the wonderful time ~ yvette bjork is always such a pleasure to watch, especially since she doesn't get much attention in the u.s. this performance was very delicate and intimate, i think mostly because the choir was not there. i was struck by the white paint on her fingers. i love the way she turns herself into art. the sound quality was very good. this performance is consistent with many of her other TV performances in that she appeared to be very nervous, flicking her hands about and fighting to gain control of her voice, which shook very subtly. i wouldn't say this dampened the performance significantly or even slightly. i'm also happy about the choice of "cocoon," since we've already had a peek at other songs on the album on letterman and HBO. any time leno mentioned bjork beforehand, the fans would scream and go wild, which found completely endearing. after the performance, she was put on the spot about her swan dress, and i think she handled it brilliantly. were you surprised? "a little bit," spoken with a child's innocence. the inflections in her voice are just so pure and honest. a humorous sidebar is that one of the guys in matmos started rubbing the other guy all over his hair and his back. it looked like the caresses of lovers, but then you realized that he had a microphone in his hand and was making music with noise. some non-bjork fans' reactions were that she should get rid of matmos and just play with zena. (not!) oh, and did anyone notice how o'reiley looked at her sideways and paused before he shook her hands? must've been the white paint. Roxanne H bjork was her spectacular self on leno, 'cocoon' being a bold and brilliant selection; such a special little treat in the wake of the boston show but i'm in love all over again and want to go home with her and have cocoa under the kitchen table i love you bjork because you are a shiny spark of light in the world thank you Bonnie B /old reviews - 3102 |
