Ótrúleg upplifun ... ólýsanlegt!!
Fjaðrirnar, blöðrurnar, grænlenski kórinn, Við Akkeri.
Takk, takk, takk fyrir ógleymanlegt kvöld.

Coming all the way from Austin to Iceland was an exciting experiment considering I have never been to a Bjork concert. The once in a lifetime gala was an extraordinary one that will not be forgotten. I kept blinking my eyes to make sure it wasn't a dream. The Icelandic orchestra created an opening that was making me teary eyed and overflowing with emotion. Then when her vocals cut into it, my face smiled out the tears. It was like every move of hers was producing a beat through her shaking and rattling of her body. Pure and full of adrenaline.

Thank you Bjork for such an enchanting experience

Jose

Hello everyone,
now that I´ve read some reviews of the first Icelandic concert I wonder that everyone is soo satisfied with the show. Maybe I shouldn´t wonder about that because I know that most of you have this "every thing Björk does is absolutely brilliant" attitude towards her, but I think that it becomes boring to read the same review every time. Besides, I only want to show you that there are also people with different views.

Just at the beginning let me say that I found the concert GOOD. What?, neither magical nor brilliant?, some of you may wonder. Yes, only GOOD.

One reason is the playlist. She played only 18(!) songs (that are 3 less than in Paris), that was one the shortest playlist of the whole tour and for me also one of the weakest. No Cocoon, no I´ve seen it all and NO JÓGA :-(( I have so hoped for this song as I´ve missed it already in Amsterdam. I cannot understand her decision because by most fans it´s regarded as her best song. For many(including myself) it´s even her most icelandic song.

"But hey, she has sung most of the songs in Icelandic!", some of you may argue. Damn right I can only say, but was the performance therfore better? I couldn´t sing with the songs and the phonetic of the vocal part was in some cases very, hmm, strange; not because she sang in Icelandic but because the phonetic of some words in this language didn´t fit the melody. But this was rather an exeption.

Another reason for me was the crowd. The majority was so lame that I´ve asked myself what they were doing there. In front of me sat a guy who clapped his hands after a song for maybe 5 seconds, and he was definately one of many of this sort. I was really shocked when I saw that most people remained after Bachelorette in their seatings! The only true support came from us, the Björk communists! Btw, thank you guys for this, I wonder if she had played an enchore if we wouldn´t have clapped our hands bloody!

I hope that you don´t get me wrong; I liked the concert very much. Each song for itself was brilliant, but as a whole the concert was ONLY average. Just wanted to share that with you.

My first Björk concert and Reykjavík trip!

Came all the way from Sweden. Bought the ticket from Icelandair, they had a packet; 2700 Swedish Kronor from Oslo and back including the Björk-ticket at Laugardagshöll!
I stayed at the Isafold Guesthouse in down-town Reykjavík. That´s where I met up with Stephen Neale who also stayed there and was going to the show too!

Met up before the show with a whole bunch of people (hi y´all) arranged by Chrisitan Kloeckner; a great guy from Germany. It started with Matmus playing their experimenting sample-synth stuff for about 40 minutes. Nice end with the "ballon song" (don´t know the name of it).

Björk herself was exellent! I was in complete awe of her. She walked on stage with a big music box and sat down and listened to it play. It started of a little soft with mostly songs from Vespertine with my favorite Pagan Poetry and an Icelandic version of All Is Full Of Love among others. Then a pause for about 15-20 minutes. The show then continued in a much higher tempo. Exellent to start off slow and then shock you in second act! A superb version of Army Of Me. Hyperballad in Icelandic and the fantastic Isobel and more!!

There were two encores and the second one was great; she did a song I´ve never heard before, "In Our Hands" I think it was called.

A truly magical evening with more than every second song in Icelandic, and all the talk between the songs in Icelandic too. Good thing I was sitting next to a girl that was kind enough to transelate most of it for me! Björk even mentioned the trouble of chosing in singing the songs in English or Icelandic. She also did a soft little song accompanied by a blow-organ where she sang something like this "Haer aer jag haemma, Haer vill jag vara" in Icelandic witch is almost the same in Swedish. This means "I belong here, This is where I want to be". Needless to say the Icelandic crowd went wild!

After the show, me, Stephen, Sally, Ethan and Jeremy whent to "Kaffi Barin" in central Reykjavík where Björk was partying off whith her boyfriend and the Grönlenskorír (the choir-girls) among others. They were all in an exellent mood and started singing Bon Jovi's old hit "Livin' on a Prayer", it was a lot of fun!!!

Thank you Björk and the Grönlendskorír and all the other people that I met in the beautiful city of Reykjavík during these two wonderful days!

/Jonas

Ég hef þrívegis séð Björk á tónleikum; í öll skiptin í Reykjavík. Af þeim voru þessir langbestir í það heila, þó hljómgæðin hefðu mátt vera mun betri. Ég sat bara þarna í hálfgerðum trans og leyfði tónlistinni að streyma inn - iðulega með kökk í hálsinum.

Kærar þakkir.
Helgi Þór.

What can I say ? My expectations were high, too, when I went to Iceland to see another concert. Yes, I had seen the show in Berlin already (an unforgettable evening !) and could not resist Icelandair's ticket-offer, although it meant spending only 48 hours in Rejkyavík. But I was tempted to experience Bjørk singing in her home town, and it was definetly worth it !

But it took som time to warm up the 2.400 people at Laugardashöll. Maybe it was the building itself, that prevented intimacy from the beginning. After having read about all the nice places, that Bjørk had toured (including my own experience at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin) it seemed, that this sportshall did not fit the tour-concept at all.

In the beginning it seemed as if the audience had not yet arrived. The applause for Matmos was more polite than true-felt acceptance of their performance. Then Bjørk entered the stage, and it was as if the home crowd was holding back - with expectations sky-high. Although Bjørk had translated all songs into her mother-tongue and sang beautifully during the first set, there was a greater distance between the stage and the public then defined by the members of the Islandic Symphony Orchestra placed in between.

Halfway through the second set you could almost hear the ice melt. Even the most critical expectations were fulfilled by Bjørks professionalism and engagement in her songs. Not only had she translated most of her lyrics, but it seemed as if she was spelling every single word so that no one would be left in doubt about the contents. As the tempo on stage was raised (Human Behaviour, Hyper-Ballad etc.) you could even see one or two people at the edges of the seat-rows move their hips.

When Bjørk returned to the stage to perform the encores, she adressed the audience to explain her insecurity about whether she should sing in english or icelandic and decided to go more or less fifty-fifty. The Anchor Song was performed as the first encore by Zeena and Bjørk (again in icelandic) and when she sang "...this is my home" the local fans and admirers thanked her with a warm applause - after all. The concert was concluded with the energetic "In Our Hands" (which hopefully soon will be published ?!) and the locals rushed off as if the last train was leaving...

At a private party after the concert someone told me, that Bjørk was the greatest icelandic artist of the last century !!! If there are more people on the island thinking like him, it would only be fair to let Bjørk feel that 100 %. Come on, dear icelanders, you have another, last chance tomorrow at Háskólabio. Let Bjørk feel, that you accept her for being the way she is: unique and independant and filling our hearts with joy. Merry Christmas to all of you and thank you for your hospitality.

Best wishes

Es war unvergeßlich. really unforgetable. takk bjork / jochen

I will try my best English for a review of the 2 gigs in Reykjavik. You have
been there too (?), so nothing new for you.
I can compare with the gigs in Stuttgart, Cologne, Frankfurt and Parma.

1. Lugardalshöll, 19.12..
I got a really bad seat more than 40 meters away from stage. I already send
an reclamation to Icelandair, where I bought the package. So I smuggled
myself closer to stage and got a better view. The accustic was not the best,
the soround-effects hard to hear. Björk was a bit shy in the beginning,
maybee because of her hometown?!?. In the beginning the people were very
passive, and it was hard for Bjork to woke them up. But after a week in
Iceland I can say this is their mentality. And for sure 8 p.m. is to early
to get excited for Icelanders, hehe.
Matmos was much better than before and the choirrr frrrrom Grrrenland (I
love this rolling rrrrr from Bjork) was in good mood. She played a complete
different setlist compare with the gigs I have seen before. After the break
she was brillant and her voice clear. The Symphony Orchester from Iceland
was different, more classical, than the orchester she played with before.
But very good.
She sung a lot of songs in icelandic, this beautiful language, in the
beginning it sound a bit disharmonic but after 1 or 2 song I could hear the
excellent harmony she gave this experiment with her voice. Maybee because I
am from Germany and a bit tired of all the same words in English we can hear
in almost every song.
After the show I was hanging around with Bjorkophlie-peole from Australia
and Japan!!. They are really crazy for to see her live.
