This gig was the highlight of the year for me so far. If there's one thing that hasn't ever let me down, it's been Bjork's art. To watch her from the front row was a dream come true. I'm not sure about her mood when she first takes the stage. At this concert I felt it was similar to the other time I saw her in Montreal in 2003. Maybe it has something to do with Canadian audiences. Only Bjork knows for sure how she is feeling at that moment. The music doesn't suffer though, and I've seen some photos of her singing during the first few tracks, and she IS smiling! That headpiece was distracting her too, I think. After opening with Earth Intruders, the set moves through several quiet to mid tempo numbers, and everything sounded just beautiful. It was a nice balance of songs from over her entire career, and builds to a stunning climax, very similar to the Montreal show. For myself, it was just euphoric to be so close and to feel that human connection. I don't think eye contact is something she graces her fans with too often, but she does bestow graces such as little voodoo head shakes and sudden leaps to the edge of the stage. The outfit she wore was quite stunning, and she looked absolutely amazing. The stage was simply decorated with the banners and the lcd screens, and the costumes the brass section wears were so silly that everything seemed to take on a child like atmosphere. I'd say Bjork is feeling a bit more extroverted this tour. Her band this time around is another line up of stellar musicians, so the technical and musical side of the show is excellent. The arrangements for the horns worked very well in a live setting, and tracks like Wanderlust and Innocence sound far better than the studio versions. The older material was revamped nicely. Army of Me now rocks harder than ever. She really blew the lid off in the last part of the show, and I for one indulged in a lot of fist pumping and head banging. I doubt the audience was as demure as reviews have indicated, but I couldn't really tell from the front. Vancouver is quite laid back, and I didn't notice a single bad vibe in the whole place, so if that means we're demure, so be it. I know all you bjorkaphiles were in heaven to have Miss B. finally come to Our city. What about that venue? How sweet was that? The sun coming out just as the set started? Sublime. Ghostigital was interesting as an opening act. Curver makes wicked noise and Einar rants. If only we had gotten a second encore! I pleaded but Bjork ignored me. Oh, well...was magnificent anyway. To the two wonderful people that my friend Pete and I met in line, thank you for adding that extra certain something that makes days such as that truly memorable. Evan and Chris, it was an honor to share the experience with you. I haven't been able to get into this 4um lately, so I'm using yet another username. To all my old friends - salut! signed, deprogram/autodidact/stalkhousein /deprogram - 2910
This was my first time seeing Bjork in the flesh and I wasen't really sure what to expect. I have to admit, I agree with the last comment. I was up at the front too and for the first little while it was a bit strange. It felt like she was tired and "going through the motions" but she still gave a fantastic performance. There is just something so special about her voice when you hear it live, she really doesn't hold back. I'm a big fan of the Sugarcubes so seeing Einar with Ghostdigital was a super plus. He certainly lived up to his reputation as a performer and for just two guys on stage they really rocked:) Certainly the highlight of the evening was being able to see Bjork and Einar on stage together, I never thought that I'd be able to see that in my lifetime and it was really special. Bjork seemed to really perk up after "I Miss You", maybe Einar helped bring up the energy in her and the crowd, and the rest of the show was fantastic. I loved the electronics on Hyperballad and really hope that she releases a live recording or DVD of this tour. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Bjork for coming to our neck of the woods, I hope it's not the last time! /rhondarh - 2893
First of all, let me say, AMAZING show. Bjork never ceases to be a sonic pioneer. A lot of the new renditions of Bjork's older material were infused with such a refreshing breath of life. I cant get the image of Bjork running on stage for the first time to the marching of Earth Intruders follwed by the giant burst of flames out of my head!!! That being said, I must say however, from the front row, that Bjork looked either a little bored or a little tired and looked as though she was just kinda going through the motions. My biggest disappointment with the show was its length. Yes, Deer Lake has a 10pm curfew, which is too early, especially considering its not yet dark in Vancouver by that time. But Im not sure why Bjork ended at 9:45 - I dont think Ive ever seen an act finish before curfew, let alone such an early curfew. Bjork has what...7 studio albums out. I saw her perform at Coachella and was somewhat expecting that outside the context of a festival show, she would play a longer set, but no, the set was much of the same. As a support tour for Volta, I must say that Declare Independence is probably the one track that translates best to a live setting, along with Earth Intruders. Dull Flame, solo, was sadly underwhelming. Hyperballad>Pluto? PHENOMENAL. With the green lasers and all, the music, everything was amazing. And the guy who writes the blog (I forget his name) - what an artist! Oh and mad props to the Canadian guy for best stage enthusiasm! :D Anyway, overall, great show, with a few minor disappointments. /Virex Kills - 2890
