| Björk Arvikafestivalen, 10 juli 2003 Takk, takk, takk, takk, takk Björk... Efter en lång väntan på främre raden börjar konserten – som är en av anledningarna att jag befinner mig på årets Arvikafestival – lugnt med enbart stråkar, och publiken är i extas när Björk dyker upp på scen. Sedan framförs låtar som ”Isobel”, ”Hunter” och ”Unravel”. Publiken är vild. Ibland överröstar de t o m de vackra stycken där tystnaden är essentiell. Björk dansar och spretar med fingrarna. Hon kastar ett och annat leende till publiken och ibland sticker även tungan ut. Bra låtval Ungefär hälften av låtarna som spelas är från albumen Post och Homogenic. Detta passar mig utmärkt då enligt mig är de av alla Björks suveräna skivor, två av de bättre. När Björk tar i och sjunger på sitt speciella sätt på låtar som t.ex. ”All is full of love” och ”Hyper-ballad”, reser sig nackhåren och man ryser av lycka. Björk sjunger låtarna ”Pagan Poetry” och ”Bachelorette” med enorm inlevelse och jag kan bara konstatera att de låter ännu bättre live än på skiva, mycket tack vare Björks scenuppträdande som är helt magnifik och sagolik. Fantastisk scenshow Ni som har hört eller läst Björk berätta om sina låtar och varför de låter som de gör – och som i mångas öron låter som rent oväsen – förstår säkert kopplingarna till videoeffekterna som spelar sig bakom under hela konserten. Videofilmerna i sig är rena konststycken och de förstärker upplevelsen ännu mer. Konserten avslutas perfekt med låtarna ”It’s In Our Hands” och ”Pluto”. Det skruvas ordentligt på rattarna och Matmos genererar helt sjuka ljud (och oljud) som får de flesta att dansa och hoppa, även Björk hoppar omkring på scen och verkar ha hur kul som helst. Sista låten blir ”Human Behaviour” från Debut, och på något sätt så känns det självklart att avsluta med en låt som på sätt och vis startade Björks fantastiska karriär. Tyvärr så upplever jag stundtals publiken som respektlös. Folk som trycker på från tredje raden och försöker komma längre fram när vem som helst kan se att det inte går. | This was my best concert experienced so far, I've never seen anything like this before. Waiting for 5 hours, i got the best place (at least i think so, front row, right next to the mic, about 6 m) and it was worth all the waiting. I couldn't help crying during Hyperballad, Aifol and Unravel, it was sooo beautiful. B-critics shouldn't be taken for real, i dont think i'll ever will be on a better gig than this one. Too bad i didnt see all the fireworks tho, but instead, i felt the heat from the flames ;) I hope i will see Björk soon again. Love /Teo /aTheo - 839 |

| Review by Ingvar Loco Nordin at Sonoloco Record Reviews (sonoloco.just.nu): Like a moth, a noctuid, she descends on a light night July Arvika stage, a crowd of 14 thousand, all ages from about thirteen upwards - the oldest at least in their sixties - focusing its collected attention – a massive surge of intensity – on the fairy-like women in her little body, materializing with a string octet, Zeena Parkins on harp and her faithful servants Matmos with their Macintosh computers and their cinema displays. The immediate comparison, in reference to that brilliant energy in that frail anatomy, encompasses Edith Piaf, and in the sense of intellectual sharpness and intuitive creativity my thoughts stray towards Bob Dylan. As she starts moving unto the edge of the stage, her shiny eyes covering the audience in a long sweep, she appears like a magically charged female being out of a Stockhausen opera; out of the opera cycle Licht – and when it comes to experimentation and ingenuity, to new thoughts and… integrity, she can only be compared to Karlheinz Stockhausen… and coincidence has it, that she has made an official interview with Stockhausen; one of the best Stockhausen interviews I’ve read, completely without the blindfolds of scholars or musicologists, with just her seeing eyes, hearing ears and crystal clear mind. She has brought art music and the avant-garde onto the pop scene, and she has revitalized this scene with a sense of magic, of possibilities, of the hope of new worlds ahead. No one else has managed that. Her significance is immense, her influence on contemporary art substantial and genuine… and perhaps only a Stockhausen addict like myself can feel and understand the real scope of this amazing feat. She seems only half real as she moves through the first pieces of the Arvika concert in the open air theater, in this typical Swedish installment called People’s Park, where several stages are erected around a large, hilly and wooded area; some stages permanent, others put up just for the Arvika festival; a three day music festival in a small, rural Swedish town not far from the Norwegian border. Björk looks like a mix of a cartoon figure and a frail woman, the way she is dressed and the way she has applied her make-up. Her intense liveliness, her point-blank life force, rages almost eerily out of her soaring fairytaleness… I feel my hair rising all along my arms, and I feel a storm rising through my chest. Magic has descended on Arvika, on the late light summer night, on the bewitched crowd; a sea of eyes shining, a forest of arms waving, an oceanic wave of pure love rushing towards Björk, who receives the emotions with a raised head, outstretched arms and an open mouth. Björk’s presence, part moth, part cartoon and 100% spirit, is a flashing light through an age of darkness – a brief window on wonderful possibilities of existence – an inspiration for all who haven’t given up, for all who yearn to seriously take their lives in their hands and enter the adventure… With all her albums of music in the back – most recently the indispensable Vespertine – she enters the hearts of the audience in Arvika with light dance steps, her tongue licking her lips, her black hair in a new cut storming around her head, making me think of an Icelandic horse, mane flying, the horse floating across the plains in a peculiar tölt gait. It is not to be overlooked that this treacherous and sparkling artist does originate in Iceland; a country of glaciers, geysers and volcanoes. She blows hot and cold, just like her country, and just like her country brought us the Icelandic Tales, she also brings tales of ageless – or timeless – significance to us in her songs, and in the way she brings us these songs. Her stubbornness and complete integrity, which she probably has had to fight fiercely for, is a hallmark of female Icelandic tradition. The Icelandic women have by tradition been stubborn, restive, independent and creative, and very strong in love, in compassion, in solidarity; solidarity with next of kin, with the land of sustenance, with the animals and with the spirits of the shaman regions. In this way, Björk comes out of the ages like a messenger; she is not only of this age, of the contemporary world. She is much more than that. Her art is much more than mere music too. Venture into her video art. It is sensational. The video for All Is Full Of Love is the most breathtaking piece of video art I've laid my eyes on! It's so curiously compassionate beyond the human touch, beyond the machinery of emotions, beyond the framework of mind. Yes, all is full of love! She is not one that easily goes on tour and hits stages all over the world. For a public figure of her stature she is still a rather shy and introvert person. This makes me feel even more compassion towards her, since I understand the pain and agony she most likely has to come to terms with to tour. I thought of this while watching her in Arvika, in her magnificence and artistic brilliance. I could feel the vulnerability of that one person up there, on whose shoulders so much expectation was weighing, from this large mass of people who had gathered, some traveling long distances, even from other countries. Yes, I could feel this strain on Björk, and yet she danced through her act like this magic Stockhausen goddess, visiting from the beyond… I am impressed at this conduct, this discipline, this fight with the demons that Björk for sure has to fight, like all vulnerable and sensitive persons who find themselves in an extreme, public situation. I can only say that I am full of love for this person, who manages to give all this magic in a light summer night in rural Sweden, regardless of the strains of fame, regardless of all the hard work of rehearsals and this curse of creative necessity, regardless of the sometimes outrageously untalented and almost morbid reviews from some reviewers, like for example the filth delivered by the constipated and musically illiterate reviewer of the Swedish newspaper Expressen after the concert at the Arvika Festival. Hopefully, that verbal garbage is no more than the buzz of flies in her ears, if she indeed ever gets to hear about this insignificant thunder-fart of a reviewer. I saw a young girl of perhaps 16 close to the stage with tears in her eyes beside a dancing little pony tail woman of about 60 when Björk broke into Joga: “…this state of emergency, how beautiful to be, state of emergency is where I want to be…” This is probably how Jenny Lind was met once upon a time in another century. I feel desolate when I think about this, because Jenny Lind is gone, long gone; an artifact of the past, a wondrous legend, and likewise, Björk will be gone, as everything is passing. Björk to me feels like a Nordic summer, so intense but also so devastatingly momentary that you feel melancholic for its end already when it begins… and only my belief in the Tibetan tales of the innumerable lives that we have to travel before we eventually reach full enlightenment and leave the wheel of deaths and rebirths can grant me some consolation in regard to the brevity of Nordic summers and of vulnerable wonders of beauty and artistic bliss like Björk. She comes out of the flow of Time with gravel in her hair, gravel of instants; “instants that become moments, which become life patterns, which in turn shape the web of the spirit of the age”, to quote poet Sune Karlsson from one of his 1980s’ poems. As the night deepened into its darkest hour – still just a deep twilight in these northern parts - Björk’s show expanded into a fierce techno catharsis with huge fireworks shooting towards the stars in synchronousity with rumbling, thumping crescendos in the music, and fire aggregates along the front of the stage suddenly ejected meter high jets of fire. It was a remarkable display of pure energy, Björk style! After two encores – Generous Palmstroke and Human Behaviour – Björk smilingly and waving left not to reappear (on her way to Russia, I think), and as stage hands began to dismantle the equipment the people sank back into the summer dusk, while I and my friend Hans-Åke Runell – the photographer who took all the pictures of Björk shown on this page – retrieved our car from the V.I.P. parking that the Sonoloco Record Reviews’ credentials has rendered us, and put the camera with all the pictures in the back; the camera that we nearly did not get onto the grounds because the more than flimsy girls in the press tent thought it might be “too big” (!) with its 300 mm lens… We were two deeply moved old-timers (both 50+, having entered the festival at no charge) driving through the night, the 350 kilometers home, across lonely and empty rural roads, through forests and fields. | I'd like to start off by commenting on how wonderful I thought the show was; Björk's voice, the fireworks, the songs, the video art...the experience. But I'd also like to mention two girls that were in the audience. I waited for hours to be able to see Bjork from the front row, and so did they, I didn't really talk to them, but they had the loveliest outfits on. It seemed like they had sewn the clothes by themselves and I just wanted to say; great job! (if one of you happen to read this) The clothes were really imaginative and I'd just like to let you know that you have spread some joy(I love to see people who dare to be creative, and dare to play with their appearances). I can't really describe the clothes all that well, but one outfit was mostly yellow and one girl had the Björk "b" on her black shoulderbag... | Björk Gudmundsdottir, festivalens dragplåster, verkar ha sneglat på de östtyska pyroteknikerna Rammstein innan hon åkte på sommarturné. Eldslågor slår upp från scengolvet och fyrverkeripjäser sprider glitter över himlen. Själv är Björk inte lika explosiv. Hon vankar av och an i sin rosa vansinnesklänning och inskränker mellansnacket till ett viskande "tack-tack-tick-tick-tack". Det blir en konstig kontrast mellan fyrverkeriet och den introverta isländskan. Första halvan av konserten är en hitparad med låtar från "Post" och "Homogenic". Spåren från senaste skivan "Vespertine" är roligare och mer abstrakta. Harpaspelaren, stråkensemblen, electronicaduon Matmos och Björks röst strimlas av hennes ständiga vapendragare Leila Arab som vrider på sina effektboxar. Björk sätter skogen i brand Ska någon artist ta andan ur en så är det Björk Gudmundsdottír. När nära en och en halv timme långa konserten är slut vid midnatt är det nästan som att ha besökt en annan planet och landat igen. Desorienterad och omtumlad, men lycklig. BJÖRK Vintergatan, torsdag Björk, hennes nio man starka stråkförstärkning, harpspelare och två elektroniska musiker väjer inte för några medel att skapa effekt. Allt börjar lugnt, med enbart stråkar, men snart är scenen ett främmande landskap, komplett med filmvisning på storduk. Björk är glad och dansar och dansar - än älva, än kvinnlig schaman och skapar en surrealistisk stämning. Till en vidunderlig Joga flammar eldstungor över scenen, varefter det första sjoket av de 600 fyrverkeripjäserna exploderar på himlen. Det är överjordiskt och det enda som hindrar fulländning är att det ibland känns lite segt. | Bessynnerlig spelning Björk är en besynnerlig artist som inte gör det lätt för lyssnaren. Inte ens i hemmamiljö är hennes mystiska låtar lättillgängliga så ni förstår säkert att en otålig festivalpublik har än svårare att fatta galloppen. Så att börja med fyrtio minuters kammarmusik utan direkta effekter var kanske inte det smartaste. Segdragen vemodighet brukar inte kunna sparka igång en festivalpublik och Björks försök till intim närvaro dränktes snabbt av sorlet framför Vintergatan. Men sedan tog showen fart. Den mycket omtalade och påkostade fyrverkerishowen fastnade kanske lite halvvägs men de flammor som omgav Björk på scen var läckert arrangerade och lågorna dansade kraftfullt till hennes hymner. När stråkarna fick lämna plats för mer moderna tongångar vände spelningen till det bättre. För när elektronerna fick löpa amok i högtalarna frambringades ett så övertygande kakofoniskt kaos att spelningens långt ifrån imponerande inledning snabbt glömdes bort. Några fler låtar från debutplattan hade dock varit på sin plats - det kändes ibland som om Björk medvetet valde att undvika sina hits. "Human behaviour" hamnade sist i ett set som hade mått betydligt bättre av små glädjeskutt här och där. Trots återhämtningen kvarstår fakta. Utan effekter är Björk helt färglös. | [ARVIKA] Björk på nåt sätt 2003-07-11 14:29 Jo. Jag vet inte riktigt vad jag ska skriva om årets huvudakt på Arvikafestivalen. Björk. Jag läste någonstans att hon var ute på en "Greatest Hits"-turné. Kändes bra för mig som tappade bort henne någonstans efter "Post". Men det är inte en särskilt nostalgisk Björk som avslutar torsdagen på största scenen, Vintergatan. Enligt mer välinitierad källa bjuder hon på minst fyra helt nya låtar (redan halvvägs genom konserten). Jag känner igen en låt under hela kvällen. Så mycket för "Greatest Hits". Uppbackad av tre ljudmaskinister och en stråkoktett bjuder hon istället för minimalistisk elektronisk musik. Ambient känns som ett passande begrepp även om det inte är särskilt meditativt. Det sprakar och knastrar. Musiken fungerar mest som ljudkuliss till Björks sångmelodier. Bra? Tja, jag vet inte riktigt. Det låter på något vis vackert. Och hela föreställningen med sin massiva eldshow, sina fyrverkerier och videoprojektioner känns mer som performance än popkonsert. Så sett är det faktiskt rätt bra. Och förmodligen är det mer här och nu som hon befinner sig. | Oinspirerat, Björk! ARVIKA.  Björk Snygg show. Men Björk själv har haft mer inspirerade kvällar än denna. Att lyckas boka Björk torde för Sveriges mest goth- och synthorienterade festival vara minst lika klockrent som fjolårsbedriften att få hit The Cure. Båda akterna är hjältar hos festivalens svartklädda kärnpublik men drar även "vanligt" folk. Precis som Cure har Björk varit hetare, men där Robert Smith och hans band levererade en riktigt seg sobrilsoppa förra året är Björk fortfarande en händelse på scen. Når inte ut I alla fall var hon det i Roskilde för knappt två veckor sedan. Förvisso levererade hon även då en föreställning som i mångt och mycket var mer performance än popshow, och utan flera kända låtarna. Men hon skapade stor stämning. Genom sin karisma, sin enorma röst och en show som med storslagna fyrverkerier, eld, klädbyten och videoprojektion lyfte de ofta ganska svårfångade låtarna till nya höjder och verkligen kommunicerade. Arvika-setet är aningen mer varierat, men också mer introvert. Björk verkar inte lika engagerad i kväll, och når heller inte ut lika bra. Visst blir det imponerande kakofoni på slutet även här, och det känns när Björk och harpisten gör den fina "Palmstroke". Och "Human behaviour" är precis lika mäktig som senast. Men de kommer några såsiga passager försent för att verkligen rädda föreställningen. Håkan Steen Björk Plats: Vintergatan, Arvikafestivalen. Björk En gång, med solodebuten Debut, låg Björk helt rätt i tiden. Och framför allt - det kändes som att hon ville oss nåt. Hennes texter gjorde åtminstone ett försök att nå publiken. Det är över tio år sen. Efter det har hon inte längre ägnat sig åt musik. Hon har ägnat sig åt att vara Björk. Hennes framträdande på Arvika i går var ingen konsert. Det var en performance där Björk spelade Björk, ackompanjerad av atonala stråkar och fyrverkerier. Låtarna, om man kan kalla dem för det, är egentligen bara lekstugor för ett ego som går på tomgång. Artister ska visserligen försöka överskrida gränser, men när det blir ett självändamål borde de pensioneras och skickas på hem - eller möjligtvis till närmaste Björk-konsert. | Sent på torsdagskvällen steg den mytomspunna Björk upp på Arvikafestivalens största scen Vintergatan. Trots en halv intresserad publik och kyligtväder är den egocentriska sagofiguren Björk rakt genom professionell och trollbinder mig i nära en och en halvtimme. Namn: Björk Dag: Torsdag Tid: 22:30 Scen: Vintergatan  Jag brukar inte vara lätt charmad när det gäller festivalspelningar. Oftast är något små banalt som självförvållat som ex. dåligt med sömn eller att jag står på något uselt ställe som helt förstör stämningen. Men ikväll är det inte mycket på Vintergatan som kan gå fel. Ljudet är underbart, scenshowen är magnifik och Björk verkar vara på sitt bästa humör på mycket länge. Vore det inte för den otacksamma publiken som ständigt flamsar omkring och stundtals förstör upplevelsen för majoriteten så skulle detta vara en av de största hädelserna som hänt Arvikafestivalen någonsin. Stråkoktetten som ligger under Björks manér leder henne under hela konserten till en aningen vulgära men ständigt imponerande utsvävningar. Tillsammans med hennes hummande prosa på isländska får sakteliga kårar krypa upp för min rygg. Popigt värre skulle vara en lämplig rubrik men när de mer elektroniska vibbarna från ”Vespertine” och ”Homogenic” äntrar ljudbilden slår det mig så sakteliga att det är här Björk hör hemma. Det mörka underförstådda soundet är något som många artister endast kan sukta efter. Det är imponerande och vackert. Björk har på ett makalöst sätt lyckats kombinera en audiovisuell och estetiskfulländad show till den grad att hon konkurrerar med de absoluta största nuförtiden. De pyrotekniska effekterna är pampiga och många till den grad att de inte är överflödiga. | I've just gotten back from Arvika, Sweden. Björk was no doubt the main attraction of the entire Arvika Festival. What a wonderful concert it was, and what a wonderful day! The last time I experienced Björk in concert was in Reykjavik, Iceland on December 19, 2001, so it was great to experience her once more along with Matmos, Zeena Parkins and the string section. I enjoyed her new songs as well as all her previous familiar ones. All in all a beautiful concert with Björk as great as ever! /sundarotto - 768 |
| Absolutely brilliant. I was slightly closer to the stage than to the control tower and right in the middle, sideways wise. from earlier acts I had determined that it was the best spot for optimum sound quality, and I seem to have been right; The sound was WAAAAY better than at both Hammersmith Apollo and Sheperd's Bush in London in may, and after some mild roughing in the crowd for the first few songs (before people settled in their spots), it was pure bliss. I'll admit tears ran down my chins during unravel, all is full of love, desired constellation (this track is so utterly amazing, third time I heard it now), an echo a stain (they've improved lots on the already brilliant album version) and of course the finale of bachelorette. The violently beefed-up Pluto is absolutely awesome and the video is true art, and I love Where's The Line too. I'm feeling more entusiastic about her next album than I've ever been with Björk, which is saying a LOT coming from someone as obsessed as myself :-) I went to the tent of that shitty tabloid Expressen and explained (in language so colourful I dare not quote myself) what a bunch of retards they are for giving the concert 1 out of 5 by the way. /ukiro - 765 |
| I was at the first road on the left, sitting there for four horurs to see her i got some björkfirends don't remeber your names, it was fun though talking about wich songs we wanted to hear and playing bjork songs on flutes and stuff, on the intro before the string octet got on, i talked with a couples of girls one whom i danced with at another concert later on, about what it was like ice melting and we imagen our own video then she enterd, being the first time i was supriseling calm, i think i haven't really got it yet that i aw her, she looked so sweet and isobel was great, and hunter! i fell in love with the little plings , i danced alot and i really freak ut during pluto and It's in our hands, the videos played where sobeuatiful!!! | this nameless song was just fantabulous. it's been five years since i saw her, and then i was at the very back, now i was on the front row. it felst violent and very good. but i felt a bit envious of the people who got to see her on the latest tour, in the concert-halls, because you loose so much of the experience when you're struggeling not to faint, or to not to get hurt when the secutiryguards drags people out of the crowd... but nevertheless, it was just plain lovelyness <3 /polarme - 755 |
| Just got home today from Arvika Festivalen. And what I GREAT Björk concert!! She looked beautiful! As said here before; a LOT of people in the audience in the front just "ran" over me as well... It was very irritating... I felt like I couldn't concentrate a 100% because of the risk of falling... BUT, the show was really wonderful! It was my first time seeing Björk live, and what a thrill!!! :o) It felt like the show was over in a minute...It went so fast, because it was so great!!! The fireworks, the "firebombs" and the screen in the background made that little extra!! Lovely!! I read the in a Swedish newspaper the day after the concert, and the reporter really butchered the concert... ;o( /lindi - 753 |

| i don't know if this relolo person is for real or not, but i think his little messages should be removed from this site! freedom of expression should extend only to those who have something to say! bjork is without a doubt the best thing going in popular music today! she is brave, whimsical, visceral, her lyrics are immediate and universal, her music is startling in its uniqueness, and we're lucky to have her! she is also stunningly beautiful in every way! anyone who doesn't agree with any of this should shut up and go listen to eminem or some other crap! i love looking at the photos of the european shows (her surreal outfits remind me of some of the stuff peter gabriel wore back in the 70s with genesis)! i hope to get a chance to see the show when she comes to the states! we love you, bjork! keep up the good work! viva l'iceland! /atonalis john - 737 |

| Just got back home - the gig was terriffic. Instead of 'Scary', she did 'Gotham Lullaby', and at the end of 'All Is Full Of Love', she did the little pa-ra-pa-paa paa-paa part from 'Domestika'.
