We are a group of three artists:
Sigrún Hrólfsdóttir, Jóní Jónsdóttir and Eirún Sigurðardóttir.

We have been working together since 1996, making performance, photography, video, poetry, sculpture and other nice things.
You can see more about our work at www.ilc.is

How are things?

Things are very good.

Spring is lurking under there somewhere and we are happy.

How did you get in
contact with Björk?
We have known her work since we were kids but we became friends a few years ago.

The connection to Volta is through a crochet mask,
that was a part of one of our sculptures,

and she saw a picture of one of us wearing the mask in the newspaper.
And this image somehow stuck with her and from there it developed.

Have you worked
with Björk before?

Hmm...

well we did sing
in a remix
that she made of
The Triumph Of A Heart,
that was a lot of fun.
What was the concept behind the creation?

We did speak a lot with Björk and kept sending thoughts and images back and forth,
and listening to the music gave us inspiration. We were thinking of this kind of prehistoric spirit and the colorful and organic growth of the yarn.

No, there is not really any basic concept but a lot of different elements coming together
to make something new, based on something very old.

It is very related to the album and our origins.
Maybe it is Icelandic crochet, touched by african colors.
The old icelandic crochet grandmother meets the voodoo mother of the tribe.

Did it turn out like you had thought?

No. Because we didn't really know what to expect.
It's exciting to trust the intuition. We love how it turned out.

The beauty of crochet, is how organic it is, like nature.

It should not be forced, just let it happen while you listen to the TV or to each other in the sewing circle, or when you are by yourself, having a quality moment.....

then beautiful things happen.

Did it take long to
crochet this one?
Yes, well it actually consists of many smaller pieces that come together
to make the whole, and there are multiple ways to
mix
and
match
Tons of yarn too, yeah?
Yes, many trips to the yarn store.
One of us was also travelling in Sicily and she bought some very special neon yarn there.
Any particular memorable moment from this collaboration?

Hmm the crochet sheepskin shoes
somehow come into being,

and going to New York to shoot the pictures was of course a very nice experience.
It was both a very exciting and a very calm experience.

A lot of memorable moments happened while sitting in the crochet circle,
since the gossip element seems to especially turned on by yarn.

But these are all of course top secrets!
Will there be more in the future?

Yes, we keep on trucking.

The future is

beautiful
What is next for the ILC?

We are working on several different things.

In april we are planning on stayin in Berlin,  for a month.  We will be working and exhibiting in a gallery/residency called ArdBia Berlin...   this we are very much looking forward to.

Svalbardsströnd.  In July we will be doing a show in the north of Iceland, at Safnasafnid in Svalbardsströnd.  It's great to be up nort in the high summer.  There we will show more Tent Ladies.   These are dresses/tents that you can go into and have a picnic or just stay there inside them.

One of our biggest projects for next year is also in
connection to the often mentioned Tent Lady.
This is an exhibition wich focuses violence
against women. This exhibition opens at
Unesco Paris next year.....

Thank you, ladies!
